Recycling in Bali: EcoBali and its Zero Waste mission

There’s plenty of facts out there on why recycling is important. The world population is growing, not shrinking, and currently each human being adds significant waste to the planet over his or her lifetime. Especially in Bali and other highly touristic reliant places, waste is an emerging problem which also has to be addressed on a personal level.

Bali, commonly known as the ‘Island of the gods’, has always boasted stunning natural landscapes including lush green tropical rainforests, majestic mountains, and pristine beaches; as well as gracious and friendly locals. Local Balinese people traditionally used only organic materials leaving no waste behind. With the introduction of plastics, non-degradable waste is now covering Bali from head to toe. In Southern Bali alone, the quantity of solid waste produced exceeds 240 tons every day.

Fortunately there are a lot of companies in Bali now, which are growing awareness and interest in recycling & plastic minimizing programs, to stop this beautiful island and the surrounding ocean drowning in a flood of – mostly plastic – waste.

One of those great companies is EcoBali, which takes on the problems of waste management in Bali.

EcoBali was established in 2006 in response to the urgency of waste management problems in Bali, with a vision is to achieve “Zero Waste” by 2020. The team at EcoBali includes professionals experienced in environmental issues and educational programs. Their programs are designed to encourage practical actions by providing sustainable tools and solutions made in collaboration with businesses, NGOs, and community volunteer groups.

EcoBali is operating their own sorting and material recovery facility (MRF) ensuring that produced waste is properly managed and will not become a burden to Bali’s beautiful environment. Their focus is to maximize recycling, reduce quantity of waste to landfill and promote composting. They also guarantee the disposal of the remaining residue only in legal facilities.

Their offered services include waste collection & recycling, which can be individually organized for your villa, office, restaurant, hotel, community or school. Within this service they are also providing training for your staff for the two-bin recycling system, which is dividing paper and non-organic waste.

For special occasions which are producing additional waste, there is also an option for organizing an extra pickup outside of the regular schedule.

There is also an affordable readymade composting system which can be setup at your house, as an easy solution for your organic waste.

If you have larger amount of Recyclables they can also buy it from you. In their program “Ini Bukan Sampah” (This is not waste) they support the idea of a waste bank that allows people to get paid for collecting Recyclables.

Other program areas include “Environmental Education” that focuses on waste management issues by promoting awareness and waste segregation at the source in schools and communities, “Recycling” by collaborating with packaging producers and the recycling industry in order to maximize the recycling of non-organic waste, “Waste Reutilization” by striving to find ways to transform waste into other useable objects and prioritize local solutions, “Bring Your Own Bag” (BYOB) by encouraging the community to utilize reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags, and “Event Support” by actively promoting environment activities in the community.

If you want to get more information on how to join the recycling mission in your own villa or office, feel free to talk to one of our agents or visit EcoBali’s homepage to get more information.
