Visa Types in Indonesia

When you come to Bali, be prepared to suffer some administration horror before you can drink a fresh young coconut on the beach or explore those wonderful rice fields. If you plan a long-term stay, the Immigration Office will be your best friend at the beginning. You can choose among many visa types based on your planned lifestyle in Bali. Check our list below and decide which one may be the best fit for you!

 

Tourist visa 30 days

What is this? A short visit visa for 30 days without extension possibility.

Who is it for? For those who are coming for holiday or for any short term event.

Can it be extended? No.

What are the application requirements? There are no requirements, you receive a free stamp in your passport at the airport upon your arrival. It is eligible for citizens of these 169 countries.

How much is the fee? Free

 

Visa on Arrival (VOA) with extension

What is this? A short visit visa for 30 days with one time entry and the possibility of extension.

Who is it for? For those who come for holiday or for participating at any social, cultural events. Working and doing business activities are not allowed with this visa.

Can it be extended? Yes, one time for an additional 30 days

What are the application requirements?

Passport which must be valid 6 months from entry date, return flight ticket.

How much is the fee? 35 USD (payable at the Visa counter at the airport), extension is 35 USD

 

Social / Cultural visa

What is this? A short visit visa with single entry for 60 days with social or cultural purpose.

Who is it for? For those who are coming with studying purpose, through foreign exchange programs or visiting family and relatives. It is not allowed to work or take up employment with this visa.

Can it be extended? Yes, up to 180 days (almost 6 months) and should be extended every 30 days.

What are the application requirements?

Passport and photos, Application form from Embassy, Sponsor letter from school or an Indonesian citizen, KTP from your sponsor, return ticket. (May vary between different embassies & if you use an agent for applying)

How much is the fee? ~50 USD, extensions around 30 USD/ 30 days

 

Business visa

What is this? It can be a single entry 60 days business visa or a multiple entry 12 months business visa.

Who is it for? For those who are coming with business purpose – meeting business partners, participate on conferences or meetings & for researching business opportunities in Indonesia. It is not allowed to take up employment with this visa.

Can it be extended? Yes, the single entry 60 days visa can be extended up to 180 days, extendable every 30 days. For the multiple entry 12 months visa you are required to exit the country every 60 days and come back again.

What are the application requirements?

Passport valid for minimum 6 months, photo, CV, Sponsor letter or official invitation and documents from an Indonesian company. For the 12 months visa you need also a special permit (TELEX).

How much is the fee? Single entry visa costs ~50 USD and Multiple entry visa costs ~110 USD for 60 days

 

Temporary Stay Permit – Working visa (KITAS)

What is this? A temporary stay permit valid for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. (In combination with an IMTA – work permit)

Who is it for? For those who want to work in Bali and officially employed by an Indonesian based company.

Can it be extended? Yes, the 6 months validity can be extended for another 6 months. The 5 year KITAS should be extended in every one year. You are required to leave the country before the visa expires and apply again.

What are the application requirements?

Sponsorship from an Indonesian based company proven with official documents, passport, CV, photos. (You are not able to apply for this kind of visa without sponsorship from a company based in Indonesia. Some visa agents may promise you otherwise, but be aware as those practices are illegal.)

How much is the fee? ~500 USD/year

 

Student visa (Student KITAS)

What is this? A long term stay permit which is valid for 1 year.

Who is it for? For students or scholarship participants.

Can it be extended? Yes, up to 5 years in every one year.

What are the application requirements?

Passport valid for minimum 6 months, photos, CV, Application form, Medical report, Sponsor letter from school

How much is the fee? ~370 USD/year

 

Retirement visa (Retirement KITAS)

What is this? A limited stay permit valid for 1 year.

Who is it for? If you are 55 years old or older and would like to spend your years of retirement in Bali. Working, earning money or business activities are not allowed with this visa.

Can it be extended? Yes, every one year.

What are the application requirements?

Passport valid for minimum 18 months, Health and life insurance, proof about receiving pension, CV, statement that you employ an Indonesian citizen for informal assistance.

How much is the fee? ~600 USD/year

 

Family visa (Family KITAS)

What is this? A limited stay permit valid for 1 year.

Who is it for? For spouse, family members or children whose parents/wife/husband is an Indonesian citizen or a KITAS holder.

Can it be extended? Yes, up to 5 years, every one year.

What are the application requirements?

Passport valid for minimum 18 months, Marriage certificate or Birth certificate – other documents depend on whether the sponsor is an Indonesian citizen or foreign family member with KITAS.

How much is the fee? ~340 USD/year

 

Tip1: Having a visa agent makes your life much easier at Immigration as you can skip those long lines and only have to go there once instead of 3 times.

Tip2: Wear appropriate clothes and shoes when you go to Immigration. Tank tops, flipflops and boardshorts are not only impolite but they may refuse any further assistance for you as well.

Tip3: Pay attention to your visa expiry date. In case of overstay you will have to pay a daily penalty.
